The new study, which was recently published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal PeerJ, provides evidence of the superior early-phase absorption kinetics of SOLUGEL® Supra ultra-low molecular weight collagen peptides (LMWCP) that contain bioactive di & tripeptides.
Advancing the Science of Collagen Bioavailability
While collagen supplements have become increasingly popular in the nutrition and wellness markets, collagen hydrolysates can differ significantly in terms of molecular weight and peptide composition. Such factors may influence the efficiency with which they are utilized by the body.
To better understand these differences, researchers compared an ultra-low molecular weight collagen peptide (500 Da) containing more than 45% di & tripeptides with a standard collagen hydrolysate (2,000-3,000 Da).
The study combined two approaches:
- An exploratory human clinical study involving healthy volunteers to assess postprandial plasma amino acid kinetics.
- An advanced Caco-2 cell model to evaluate intestinal absorption and transport.
Key Findings
The results consistently demonstrated that the ultra-low molecular weight collagen exhibited faster absorption kinetics, thereby enhancing early-phase bioavailability compared with standard collagen hydrolysates.
Among the main study findings regarding the next generation of collagen known as SOLUGEL® Supra collagen peptides (LMWCP) are:
- In the human study, LMWCP reached peak plasma levels four times faster (30 min vs. 120 min) compared with standard collagen hydrolysates, demonstrating accelerated systemic availability.
- In laboratory models, LMWCP-derived amino acids crossed the epithelial layer within minutes, highlighting efficient intestinal absorption.
- The enhanced absorption kinetics translated into improved early-phase bioavailability across both in vitro and in vivo models.
These findings indicate that the unique composition and molecular profile of SOLUGEL® Supra ultra-low molecular weight collagen peptides (500 Da) containing more than 45% di & tripeptides support enhanced early-phase bioavailability.
Scientific Significance
The publication contributes important new findings to the growing field of collagen nutrition and peptide science. By demonstrating accelerated digestion and absorption in both in vitro and in vivo models, the study highlights the potential advantages of collagen ingredients that are enriched in ultra-low molecular weight di & tripeptides.
These results suggest that collagen peptides with a smaller molecular size and higher concentrations of bioactive peptide forms may achieve more rapid systemic availability compared with standard collagen hydrolysates.
